David Dundas

David Dundas

b. c.1945, Oxford, England.

Lord David Paul Nicholas Dundas (born 2 June 1945, Oxford, England) is an English musician known for his film and television scoring, having previously had chart success in the rock genre.
Dundas is the son of the 3rd Marquess of Zetland, and was educated at Harrow and the Central School of Speech and Drama. His 1976 single "Jeans On" reached #3 in the UK Singles Chart, #17 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #1 in the German Singles Charts, where the song remained 19 weeks in the Top Ten. The song originally appeared as a television advertising jingle for Brutus Jeans (the words used in the jingle - "I pull my Brutus jeans on" - were replaced with "I pull my old blue jeans on" for the single release). The single was later sampled by Fatboy Slim for his track "Sho Nuff" which was also used in an advert in 2006 for SEAT Ibiza. Dundas' follow-up single, "Another Funny Honeymoon" was a medium-sized hit, reaching #29 in the UK. Dundas performed the song live on the BBC Television show, Top of the Pops, in 1977.
The son of the Marquess of Zetland, Dundas' original vocation in life was as an actor, mainly playing minor roles on stage, television and film, at one point working alongside Judy Geeson and David Niven in Prudence And The Pill (1968). Eschewing the actor's life, Dundas' claim to fame in the music world came when, as an advertising jingle writer, his work for the Brutus jeans advert on UK television spawned the hit single "Jeans On". The Dundas composition was fleshed out with help from Roger Greenaway, and released on the Air/Chrysalis label, eventually reaching number 3 in the UK charts in the summer of 1976. The tune also reached the US Top 20 in January the following year. His only other UK chart entry came in 1977 with "Another Funny Honeymoon" which reached number 29. He released two, for the most part, unremarkable albums for Chrysalis before taking up a career as a composer. His recent credits include the scores for Dark City, Withnail And I (with Rick Wentworth) and How To Get Ahead In Advertising.

"Jeans On" put David Dundas on the British charts for 13 weeks in 1976, three of which were spent in the Top Five that summer. Roger Greenaway and Dundas co-wrote the song, which came from a jingle Dundas had penned for a commercial for Brutus Jeans in the U.K. Released by Air/Chrysalis, the single crossed the Atlantic early the next year to land in the Top 20 in the states. ("Jeans On" can be found on the compilation Super Hits of the '70s, Vol. 19.) Dundas followed up with "Another Funny Honeymoon" in 1977, and the single climbed into the Top 40 in the U.K. Chrysalis issued a pair of his albums, neither of which made much of a splash. He turned his talents toward composing, and his television and movie credits include How to Get Ahead in Advertising, Sometime Never, Dark City, Sleepers, and Freddie as F.R.O.7. He and Rick Wentworth co-wrote Withnail and I's score. In addition to collaborating with Greenaway and Wentworth, Dundas's "Jeans On" has also been covered by Andre Williams and sampled by Fatboy Slim. David Dundas, the son of the Marquess of Zetland, was born in Oxford and at first pursued acting before turning to music. He found work in movies, television, and the theater. In 1968, he appeared in Prudence and the Pill with David Niven.
