Zombie Nation is a German techno and electro project of the Munich based DJ and producer Florian Senfter (aka Splank!). Until 1999 Emanuel Guenther (aka Mooner) was also involved in the project.
The first Zombie Nation five track EP was released in the spring of 1999 on DJ Hell's label, International DeeJay Gigolo Records. The debut release contained the song "Kernkraft 400", which was a remake of one of David Whittaker's small songs from the 1984 Commodore 64 game Lazy Jones. A remix of that song landed in high chart-positions all over the world.
Since 2001, Florian Senfter has released tracks on different labels under his new pseudonym John Starlight. In 2002 he did not renew his contract with Gigolo Records and decided to start his own label, Dekathlon Records. In early 2005, the new sublabel UKW Records was launched with John Starlight's John's Addiction Part 1 followed by Paeng Paeng 12" by Zombie Nation which was recorded a few months later. Sven Väth realized the potential of that song at first glance and licensed it for Cocoon Records.
The track "Kernkraft 400", specifically the Sport Chant Remix, is popular at North American sporting events. It is used by numerous arenas as their goal-celebration song, particularly in the National Hockey League, and many more as a motivational beat.
Many people believe the band to be named "Kernkraft 400" and the song to be "Zombie Nation". This is most likely due to multiple factors: the song chants "Zombie Nation," the band is a one-hit wonder in the United States and therefore not well known; the song could be said to sound like a nation of zombies chanting; and file sharing, where anyone can change the name of a file and thousands can download it in a short period of time, which became popular soon after the song was released.
A remix of this song by Osymyso was featured in Shaun of the Dead. Along with this, a similar version is found in What the Bleep Do We Know!?.
It is a pep band song for numerous schools and colleges, including Bradley University, Gonzaga University, George Mason University, Flinders University Hall, Annas House, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, University of Louisville, Wake Forest University, Glossopdale Community College, Penn State Nittany Lions, and Colorado State University. This song is also played before kickoff at Clemson University, before tipoff at the University of Maryland, Stanford University, the Penn State Lady Lions, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,University of Idaho and the University of Virginia, at Washington Redskins games, frequently between innings at Seattle Mariners games, and at the start of Toronto Maple Leafs games. The song is also played after a goal is scored at Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, and Dartmouth College hockey games.
It is also used around Major League Baseball.
