White Town is a pseudonym for Jyoti Mishra, a native of Rourkela, India who immigratedto Britain as a child and began playing keyboards at age 12. After performingwith a rock band as a teenager, Mishra began a disasterous career as a solo musician, abandoning it to form a guitar-based indie pop band, White Town, in 1989. Over the next five years White Town struggled in obscurity, releasing several singles and an album, Socialism, Sexism and Sexuality, on Champaign, Ill.'s Parasol Records.By 1994 Mishra tired of guitar and returned to keyboards, transforming White Town into a one-man synth-pop outfit, showcased on the 1996 EP Abort, Retry, Fail?.Later that year, on a lark, Mishra sent a tape of the song "Your Woman" (recorded in his bedroom in only a few hours) to the BBC; the song began receiving airplay and soon became a surprise No. 1 hit in the U.K. White Town was quickly signed to Capitol Records and released a hastily-assembled major-label debut, Women in Technology, in 1997. |
