The '80s dance band Was (Not Was) formed in Detroit in 1980. Consisting of vocalists Harry Bowens and Sweet Pea Atkinson, flautist/lyricist David Was (born David Weiss), and bassist Don Was (born Don Fagenson), the group released their self-titled debut album in 1981. Their 1983 follow-up Born to Laugh at Tornados earned the group a cult following, and contained cameos by Mel Torme and Ozzy Osbourne. After going on hiatus for a time, the group returned in 1988 with What Up, Dog?, which contained the Top 20 hits "Walk the Dinosaur" and "Spy in the House of Love." Following the release of 1990's Are You Okay?, which featured an appearance by Leonard Cohen, the group disbanded. Today Don Was is an acclaimed top-name producer, having worked with groups ranging from the B-52s to the Rolling Stones. |
