Urban trad

Urban trad

Urban Trad is the spiritual child of young Belgian composer Yves Barbieux. Yves had one big wish… to have his music performed by various artists with roots in folk and traditional music. His goal? The group's name speaks for itself, citifying and making this traditional and folk inspired music known to a greater public that is more familiar with the current, modern dance and techno sound.

The story of Urban Trad begins in June 2001. Yves Barbieux's originally traditional compositions receive a modern arrangement in the Brussels studio of Nicolas Vandooren. The most renowned musicians of the Belgian and international folk scene - from Thom Theuns (Ambrozijn) to Perry Rose and Ialma to Hans Quaghebeur (Kadril) - deliver with pleasure a musical contribution to Urban Trad's first CD.

The result? One-O-Four, a danceable CD full of melodious big-city-folk, is released in early 2001 by Universal and is enthusiastically received by press and public.

Urban Trad convinces, not only on CD but also on stage: the group is received just as enthusiastically on the festival field (amongst others, Folk Dranouter) as in cultural centres and quickly grows into a live sensation.

The summer of 2002 means a new step for Urban Trad: although the typical Urban Trad 'sound' stays deeply rooted in the tradition of the folk music, a member change provides a more rhythmic sound.

At the end of April 2003 the new album 'Kerua' was released, again a beauty, full of danceable and melancholic urban folk.

Urban Trad's international breakthrough will without a doubt follow May 24: when Yves Barbieux & Co represented Belgium at the Eurovision Song Festival in Riga (Latvia). They indeed finished 2nd at 2 points of Turkey and before Russian Sensations T.A.T.U

'Sanomi', a danceable folk pearl sung in an imaginary and thus universal language, will be the number with which Urban Trad will win the hearts of the Eurovision public.
