Sister Sledge

Sisters Sledge (as they were first known) is everything its band name promises it to be. The band comprised four real working sisters who began recording music together in 1971. Sisters Debra, Joan, Kim and Kathy began recording after their mother (herself an amateur songstress) and their former opera star grandmother, encouraged them to do so.

The girls began their career singing at Williams Tempe C.M.E. church in their hometown of Philadelphia, and were soon performing at charities, civic and political affairs and other philanthropic events under the name "Mrs. William's Grandchildren."

The siblings released their first effort, titled Money Back, in the early '70s, and did numerous other projects before dropping the "s" from their first name.

By the late 1970s, they had teamed up with Chic to do some dance/soul tunes, and between 1979 and 1981, the group released two chart-topping R&B hits as well as several other Top 10 pop hits. "He's the Greatest Dancer" and "We Are Family" became instant international favorites. The Pittsburgh Pirates contributed to the group's fame when they adopted "We Are Family" as their theme song in 1979, during their world championship.

By 1981, the group began producing its own singles. Unfortunately, around this time, the disco craze began to lose its luster. After numerous label changes, which included everyone from Atco, to Cotillion, to Atlantic, the band released And Now Sister Sledge Again in the early 1990s.

In 1992, Kathy Sledge released her first solo project, titled Heart.
