Drummer Sheila E. was born in San Francisco in 1959 and began performing publicly in her late teens, working with various groups and individuals, including her father, famed percussionist Pete "Coke" Escovedo. In 1983 Sheila E. began working with Prince as a vocalist and drummer, also recording her solo debut, Glamorous Life, in 1984. The album spawned the Top 10 single "Glamorous Life" and the Top 40 single "The Belle of St. Mark," leading to her 1985 follow-up Sheila E. in Romance 1600 and its Top 20 single "A Love Bizarre." Following the release of her eponymous 1987 album, Sheila E. rejoined with Prince for the "Sign O' the Times" tour. Her most recent solo album, Sex Cymbal, was released in 1991. Since then Sheila E. has been a popular session percussionist, working with bands like Poison and Tony! Toni! Tone! |
