Shanice (Wilson)

Shanice (Wilson)

Born in Pittsburgh on May 14, 1973

Shanice Wilson proved herself to be a natural entertainer at an early age. Growing up in Los Angeles, the young singer had appeared in several musicals and television commercials before being cast in the popular children's program "Kids Incorporated" at the age of 10. An appearance on "Star Search" in 1984 led to a record deal with A&M and Shanice released her debut album, Discovery, in 1987. Scoring two high-charting hits with "(Baby Tell Me) Can You Dance" and "No 1/2 Steppin'," the young singer moved to Motown Records and released her follow-up album, Inner Child, in 1991. The record spawned the international hit "I Love Your Smile," which earned Shanice a Grammy nomination, as well as "I'm Cryin'" and "Lovin' You."

After a handful of soundtrack appearances, including contributions to the Boomerang and Meteor Man soundtracks, Shanice released her third full-length, 21...Ways to Grow in 1994, followed by a stint on Broadway playing Eponine in "Les Miserables." She soon was collaborating with artists as diverse as Kenny Loggins on his Live in the Redwoods album; Jon Secada on a duet from the Disney film Pocahontas; and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds who signed her to his LaFace label in 1998.

Shanice's self-titled LaFace debut was released on March 9, 1999.
