Being a daughter of a singing father she didn't consider a singing carreer in the beginning. But during the summer of '91 she performed for the first time in the 'Kempenshow'. She brought some covers of Ann Christy, Axelle Red en The Bangles. Autumn '92 her first single "Een land" was ready and she appeared in some radioshows. In '93 she was selected for the preselections of Eurosong'93. To her great surprise she won the national finale, and she represented Belgium with the beautiful ballade "Iemand als jij" on the Eurovision Songfestival in Ireland. Just before her departure to Ireland she could present her first full Album "Iemand". Besides songs of her own, you can also find a cover from Dan Fogelbergs "Longer" on this CD.
Barbara is also popular in the Netherlands. She appeared in TV programs like "Tineke en De Schreeuw van de Leeuw ".
In 1994 her record company gave her the opportunity to start working on a English repertoire.At the end of March that year her first English single "True Love" was released. This number was written by Alides Hidding, who had some great hits in the '80's with his band 'The Time Bandits' in Europe and the United States. Meanwhile everybody knows that "waiting for a new moon" is a top quality album. This album also opened some gates to prove something internationally. One thing lead to another and Barbara was invited at the SOPOT Festival '95 in Poland where she did two live songs that were broadcasted on TVP 1. Other guests on this festival were ANNIE LENNOX - VANESSA MAE - CHUCK BERRY ea.
For her second English album "Tender Touch" there was a lot of international interest. Artists like LULU and TINA ARENA provided some songs en renowned producers like JAMIE LANE gave the finishing touch in the well known London Studios. With this album Barbara astonished everybody. Also the duet with Paul Michiels (Soulsister) "Leaving This Town" was a big succes. Quality doesn't pass unnoticed. This is proven by the fact that Barbara was asked to do the Theme song of "WINDKRACHT10" a MULTIMEDIA-TV1-TROS-FILMNET TV series.
AMarch 24 1998 her most recent album "Strong" was released.The album was recorded in London and the production was done by Jamie Lane, (Jamie Lane - ex drummer 10CC en Tina Turner) Especially the singles "Amoureuse" and "Son of a Preacherman" had a lot of succes and became big radiohits in Wallonie.
After a striking silence there is finaly a new single "All I Wanna Do". A song from Marty Townsend and Michael Schack who also did the production together. -----------(Like Noel Coward said at a concert from Marlène Dietrich in the '30's : "The modern delusion -that sex is a question of liking.")
Following the single there is the album "TIMELESS" a great collection of the 18 best songs. The album also contains some new songs like "Time", "Let's make Love" a fantastic duet with mister Eurosong Johny Logan, and others.
This album proves that Barbara Dex will be timeless and stands for quality. It's a must in your collection!!
Barbara has always been fascinated by gospelmusic, and has got the perfect voice for it. In december 2002 she released the single "Jesus On The Mainline" that became a big radio hit.
2003 is dedicated to gospelmusic and after the single, there will be a full album with a mixture of traditionals and modern gospelsongs. It is clear that a gospeltour will follow, and together with "The Shadow Voices" she will perform on different concerts throughout the country.
Meanwhile Barbara has become a regular guest in the very popular TV-program "De Laatste Show" where she is a member of "De Laatste Show Band" among some very respected musicians.
As an artist, Barbara has always been fascinated by gospelmusic. End 2003 there is the fantastic album "Enjoy - A taste of Gospel". together with the Tennessee Gospel Society.
There is also a Gospel tour where Barbara performes these songs together with her Live Band and a gospel choir on a modern and easy way.
2004 had a very exciting start for Barbara. She was selected for Eurosong 2004, got to the final and ended on a 3e place with the song " One Life". A duet with Alides Hidding and fantastic backing vocals, Stanley-Joseph-Dina and Tamara.
For the moment, the song is being played on 'Radio2' and 'Radio Donna', and is on its way to become a great hit.
