Champaign

Champaign

When they burst on the scene in 1981, Champaign appeared to be a group that was going to be around for quite awhile. With attractive lead vocalists Pauli Carman and Rene Jones, great production by Leo Graham, and a crossover smash hit in "How 'Bout Us," the group's self-titled debut won critical acclaim and sold well. It was a wonderful debut -- one of the best complete albums of that year. So who'd have thought that Champaign would turn into a "one hit wonder"? Their next album, Modern Heart, stiffed, providing only a minor hit with the ballad "Try Again," and their third disc, Woman in Flames, fared even worse, becoming their last album of the decade.

Lead singer Pauli Carman left in 1985 for a brief solo career (with the minor dance hit "Dial My Number"), returning to the group in 1991 for "Champaign IV" on, of all things, the Malaco blues label. It barely dented the charts, and the group remains notable for only one song.
