Brian May

Brian May

Born: 19 July 1947, Twickenham, Middlesex, England

Best known as the guitarist in rock band Queen, May has also enjoyed notable solo success. In the summer of 1983, he teamed up with Eddie Van Halen (guitar), REO Speedwagon's Alan Gratzer (drums), Fred Mandel (keybords) and Phil Chen (bass) for a supergroup session, which was released under the title Star Fleet Project. He subsequently produced the spoof heavy metal group Bad News, as well as the recording of "Anyone Can Fall In Love" by his actress partner Anita Dobson. He also worked with Steve Hackett, completed a solo album and, in 1991, wrote and recorded the score for a production of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Following a commission for an advertisement by the Ford Motor Company in 1991, May released a further single, "Driven By You", which became a UK Top 10 hit in December 1991. He was also one of the prime movers behind the Freddie Mercury AIDS Benefit in 1992, following the death of Queen's flamboyant lead singer the previous November. May enjoyed his biggest UK solo hit in September 1992 with the number 5 single, "Too Much Love Will Kill You". A belated follow-up album, Another World, featured Cozy Powell on drums but, like its predecessor, was a largely anonymous collection of MOR-orientated material.
