Michael Penn

Michael Penn

Singer-songwriter Michael Penn got his break appearing on a "Saturday Night Live" episode hosted by his bad boy brother, actor Sean. Since then, his cryptic lyrics and melodious popcraft have earned him critical praise and a devoted following.

Penn grew up in Los Angeles, the son of actor/director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan. His debut album March was released in 1989 on RCA. The single "No Myth" broke the Top 20 singles chart, and Penn was named Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1990.

Penn's 1992 follow-up, Free-For-All, failed to attract the attention of his first album, and he signed with the Epic imprint, 57 Records, for the release of his third album, Resigned in 1997. Resigned was produced by Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Black Crowes) who also plays bass on the album.

Penn also has created music for the films Hard Eight and Boogie Nights, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. His second album, MP 4 (Days Since A Lost Time Accident), was released in 2000.
