Anita Lane is an Australian singer-songwriter who has collaborated with Nick Cave and Mick Harvey, in addition to the production of solo work.
Lane was born in Melbourne, Australia in the late 1950s, and began singing and writing songs at the age of 16 years. She was a classmate of Rowland S. Howard, while she was a student of the Tertiary Orientation Programme at the Prahran College of Advanced Education (Melbourne, Australia), who would later form The Boys Next Door and The Birthday Party with Cave.
Following the formation of an intimate relationship in 1979, Lane and Cave relocated to London, United Kingdom (UK) with The Birthday Party in 1980. Lane co-wrote the lyrics of three Birthday Party songs—"Dead Joe", "Kiss Me Black" and "A Dead Song"—prior to the cessation of the band in 1983.
Lane has collaborated with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, a band that was formed after the demise of The Birthday Party, on numerous occasions: she sang one verse of the Bob Dylan cover version "Death Is Not The End" (together with Kylie Minogue and Shane MacGowan) and also contributed vocals to "The Kindness Of Strangers", from the 1996 album Murder Ballads; she co-wrote the lyrics for the title track of the 1984 album From Her to Eternity; and Lane co-wrote the lyrics of the song "Stranger Than Kindness", from Your Funeral, My Trial.
Lane and Cave performed a duet for a cover version of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's "Bedazzled" on the B-side of her 1995 single "The World's a Girl".
Lane contributed vocals to Harvey's two Serge Gainsbourg tribute albums—1995's The Intoxicated Man and 1997's Pink Elephants. Harvey also co-wrote the Lane songs "The World's A Girl" and "Do That Thing".
Lane collaborated with both Cave and Harvey for the soundtrack of the 1988 Australian film Ghosts of the Civil Dead. Lane's vocals appear over a musical score that was composed by Cave, Harvey and Blixa Bargeld (Einstürzende Neubauten, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds).
Lane has also performed and recorded her own songs. Following work with the German band Die Haut, Lane recorded the album Dirty Pearl under her own name, and was joined on the record by Cave, Barry Adamson (Bad Seeds) and Thomas Wydler (Bad Seeds), as well as Harvey, who produced the album. Dirty Pearl consists of Lane's work with Einstürzende Neubauten and Die Haut, as well as exclusive album tracks. Harvey also produced Lane's 2001 album Sex O' Clock, for which Lane recorded a cover version of the Gil Scott-Heron song "Home Is Where The Hatred Is". Lane also collaborated with Adamson on a cover version of Lee Hazlewood's "These Boots Were Made For Walking".
