Alan Parsons (Project)

Alan Parsons (Project)

Formed:1975 in London, England

Group Members:

Alan Parsons, Eric Woolfson

After engineering The Beatles' ABBEY ROAD and Pink Floyd's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON (which won him a Grammy) Alan Parsons met Eric Woolfson. Since both of them shared the same interests they decided to take up the then-fashionable 'concept album' format to showcase their talents. They used singers who suited the type of song they had written and the band PILOT formed their session musicians.

In 1976 the duo released their first album titled TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's literary classic, the album soared to the Top 40 US charts. The group's 1977 record I ROBOT inspired by Issac Asimov, rose to number 9 in America and established a strong fan following in the States.

1978 saw the release of the group's third album PYRAMID followed by EVE (1979), THE TURN OF A FRIENDLY CARD (1980, which spawned the hit 'Games People Play') and EYE IN THE SKY (1982) which yielded the hits - 'Eye In The Sky' and 'Old And Wise' (sung by Colin Blunstone of the Zombies).

Eric Woolfson's vocals and an excellent backing track on the song 'Eye In The Sky' catapulted it to the Billboard Top Three. But even though the song was a hit in America it failed to rise in the British charts.

AMMONIA AVENUE released in 1984 contained the hits 'Prime Time' and 'Don't Answer Me' which was nominated for an award at the first annual MTV awards.

STEREOTOMY (also inspired by Poe) was recorded at London's Mayfair Studios was released in 1986. The album employed the vocal talents of PROCOL HARUM'S Gary Brooker on the track 'Limelight'.

In 1987 GAUDI, a tribute to the Spanish architect whose Magnum Opus is the cathedral at Barcelona was released.

The group had always strived to create the perfect album which was both technically advanced and appreciated by their fans. In 1990 the duo's compositions for the stage musical 'FREUDIANA' was released on record. The musical was based on the life of the famous psychologist Sigmund Freud and featured Martin Webb, Loe Sayer, Eric Stewart (10cc) and John Miles on vocals. The show was staged only in Vienna, Austria because it was not intended for a European or North American audience.

After the FREUDIANA Eric Woolfson and Alan Parsons parted ways. Alan Parsons released the album TRY ANYTHING ONCE (whose concept was not having a concept!) in 1993 and ON AIR in 1996.

Time Machine, the Project's new album will be available in Japan by mid-July and the release dates for the rest of the world will follow shortly.
