Fine Young Cannibals

Fine Young Cannibals

Roland Lee Gift (singer), born 28/5 -62 in Birmingham, UK

* Got his first crush when he was about 6 on a girl called Linda.
* Moved to Hull when he was 10, spent a lot of his young life on the hospital due to several major accidents.
* The first record he ever bought was called 'Tighten Up, volume 2' - a reggae-album.
* First encountered the music-business when he played as a saxophonist in a punk "outfit"-band from Hull called 'Blue Kitchen', didn't like their style and left for 'The Acrylic Victims'
* When his career was over in that band he moved out from Hull and went to London to live in a "dump" in Holloway.
* Started to act, made his first "big" appearance in a perverted cult-movie called 'Sammy And Rosie (Get Laid)' which actually was directed by Stephen Frears! Nowadays he's also starred (amongst others) in the quite well-known movie 'Scandal'
* Moved to a big house in Archway (also in London) later on.
* He loves leather jackets, bacon sandwiches and chocolate eggs.

Andy Cox (guitarist), born 1956 in Birmingham, UK

* Grew up in an dodgy area called Winsome Green with a gambler as a father and a music-hall actress as a mother.
* Amused himself when he was young by sticking up potatoes up cars exhaust pipes! Playing 'Chicken run' on the motorway and setting fire to embank- ments!
* Had his first real job in the banana-packing industry, later on became an auctioneer.
* First encountered the music-business when playing a part in a cabaretband called 'Tommy and his quinches' Andy says: "It was a fairly filthy act"
* Left the cabaret-business to join the group 'The beat' - a band that actually had minor chart-success with tunes as 'Can't get used to losing you' and 'Mirror in the bathroom' back in the mid-eightees.
* Broke up with that band and left with David Steele to start up 'Fine Young Cannibals'...

David Steele (drums), born 1960 on Isle Of Wight, UK

* Grew up in "the most boring place on earth"
* Went to same high-school as Mark King (member of Level 42)
* Tried to vault a milk float on his moped when he was 16, it didn't work out that very well
* Moved out when he was 17 to Birmingham, lived with some "very odd people" in a house where you got an electrical shock by taking a bath.
* Joined the group 'The beat' alongsides with Andy Cox.

Fine Young Cannibals (group), born 1985

* Took their name after the movie 'The Fine Young Cannibals' (1960) with Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood as the actors.
* Had their first hit back in 1985 with 'Johnny come home'
* Andy Cox and David Steele had a side-project in 1987 called 'Two men, a drum machine and a trumpet', they released one single called 'Tired of getting pushed around', it was fairly successful
* Had their biggest hit 'til today's date with 'She drives me crazy' from their million selling album 'The raw and the cooked'
* Took the name to that album from the french antropoligist Claude-Levi Strauss who had released a book called 'Le cru et le cuit' back in 1964
* Now in the spotlights again with their greatest-hits album 'The finest' with 'The flame' as the lead-single from it
